Surf lessons at Famara beach, Lanzarote — Kaboti Surf

Surf School Famara, Lanzarote

Lessons at Lanzarote's most iconic surf beach — consistent Atlantic swells, dramatic cliffs, unforgettable sessions

Famara — Where Lanzarote Surfs

Famara stretches five kilometres along Lanzarote's northwest coast beneath the towering Risco de Famara cliffs — a natural amphitheatre that channels Atlantic swells into some of the most consistent waves in the Canary Islands. The beach sits at the base of the cliffs near the small fishing village of Caleta de Famara, where fishing boats still line the sand each morning.

Kaboti Surf has been running lessons and guided surf trips at Famara for over 15 years. When the wind swings south and the Atlantic swell lines up, there is no better beach on the island. We know which sections work for beginners, where the rip currents run, and how the break shifts with the tide — knowledge that only comes from years of teaching here alongside our ISA-certified instructors.

Our Playa Blanca base is around 90 minutes from Famara by road. Transport from Playa Blanca is included in our full lesson price — we pick you up, drive to the best spot on the day, teach you, and drop you back.

Surf Conditions at Famara

What our instructors look for before choosing Famara

Wave Type

Powerful beach break with some reef sections. The main peak is best for intermediate and advanced surfers. Beginner-friendly sections form near the river mouth at the south end of the beach when swell is moderate.

Best Wind

South or southwest wind is offshore at Famara, creating clean, glassy faces. The cliffs also provide shelter when the north trades are blowing elsewhere on the island.

Best Swell

Northwest to west swell at 1.5–3m produces the best conditions. Autumn and winter (October to March) are the most consistent months. Summer can be flat for weeks at a time.

Best Tide

Mid tide is generally the most forgiving for beginners. The main break can get heavy at low tide over the reef sections — our instructors always assess the beach before entering the water.

Experience Level

We bring beginners to the sheltered south end and intermediates to the main peak. The north sections of Famara are advanced-only — fast, hollow and unforgiving on a low tide.

When We Go

We choose Famara when conditions are right — typically autumn through spring. If another spot is better on the day, we go there instead. You always surf the best beach available.

Check Current Conditions

We check Windguru every morning before deciding which beach to use. For Famara, look at swell height (ideally 1–2m for lessons), swell period (10s+ is best), and wind direction (S/SW is offshore). Don't worry about reading it yourself — we do that for you.
