El Golfo — Lanzarote's Most Dramatic Surf Spot
El Golfo is one of Lanzarote's most extraordinary natural landscapes. Formed by a collapsed volcanic crater, it creates a natural semicircular amphitheatre open to the sea — at its base, a vivid green lagoon (El Charco de los Clicos) coloured by algae contrasts against the black volcanic sand and deep blue Atlantic. It is unlike anywhere else on the island.
Kaboti Surf has been teaching at El Golfo when conditions are right for over 15 years. The break here is a reef and rock bottom that produces fast, hollow waves — best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers who can handle a powerful, punchy wave. We bring beginners only to adjacent sections when swell is small and the beach configuration allows it safely.
El Golfo is located in the northwest of Lanzarote, roughly 80km from our Playa Blanca base. Transport is included in the full lesson price. The drive passes Timanfaya National Park and some of the most striking volcanic scenery on the island.

Wave Type
Reef and rock break producing fast, hollow waves. The main break is a right-hander that needs northeast wind and low tide to work well. Not a beginner spot on the main break.
Best Wind
Northeast wind is offshore at El Golfo, grooming the faces and making the wave hollow. South winds can make it messy. We check the forecast carefully before choosing this spot.
Best Swell
Northwest to north swell at 1–2.5m activates the break. The volcanic crater geography focuses the swell — it can be bigger here than other spots on the same day.
Best Tide
Low to mid tide produces the best shape. At high tide the wave becomes a closeout. Our instructors time arrival to match the optimal tide window.
Hazards
Strong rip currents, sharp rocks, and powerful surf make El Golfo an advanced spot. Swimming is prohibited in the lagoon due to currents. We never bring beginners to the main break.

Intermediate surfers (can catch green waves independently) and advanced surfers. If you have completed 3+ beginner lessons and are catching open-face waves, ask us about El Golfo.

El Golfo needs specific conditions — northeast wind, low-to-mid tide, and a focused northwest swell. We use Windguru to assess the 48-hour window before deciding to go. When the forecast aligns, El Golfo can be world-class. When it doesn't, we don't go.

Our ISA-certified instructors know El Golfo's tidal windows, rip patterns and best entry and exit points. We have been surfing this break for over 15 years and will always put safety before everything else. If conditions are not right on the day, we go to Famara or La Santa instead.
